Attendance policy and Orchestra Etiquette
Musicians must attend all rehearsals, sectionals, coaching sessions for which they are called.  Failure to attend rehearsals may disqualify a player from participating in the upcoming concert.  Repeated absence may be cause for dismissal from the orchestra.  Musicians may be excused from rehearsals for illness, family emergencies, school functions, etc. Please contact either the Music Director or board member if you will be absent or late. If possible, please give a 24-hours notice.

Musicians are required to be prompt, and must be warmed up and tuned by the first downbeat.  Early is on time and on time is late! Musicians are also responsible for being prepared and must have all the required materials for an efficient rehearsal. These materials may include, but are not limited to:
  • Mutes, sticks, valve oil, extra bows, strings, or other instrument-specific accessories
  • A pencil, sharpened, for bowings or other directions
  • Music in folder
NO electronic devices will be allowed at rehearsals - this includes the use of cell phones for calls or text messaging, gaming devices, iPods, etc. Any musicians caught using any device will have it confiscated until the end of rehearsal. Continued use at future rehearsals may result in dismissal from the orchestra,

No food or drink (except bottled water) will be allowed during rehearsals.

Musicians are expected to practice their orchestra music on their own or with their private teacher. Failure to progress musically may result in dismissal from the orchestra.

In addition to being prompt and prepared, players are expected to conduct and present themselves in a respectful manner during ALL orchestra functions.

Performance Dress Code
Ladies: Black long sleeved blouse and long black skirt (Mid calf or longer, no slits) or pants or long black dress (sleeves, mid calf or longer, no slits) black shoes, socks or stockings (no sandals).  Long hair pulled back please.

Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Policy
Use of illegal or controlled substances, regardless of age, is not tolerated. Orchestra functions held on school grounds are also governed by school site policies. This includes strict enforcement of the schools' Tobacco-free campus policy.

Music

All music distributed is the property of MLYS. It is the responsibility of each musician to take good care of their music. If a musician is required to make any notations on their music, it is to be done lightly with a PENCIL. All music is to be turned in to the MLYS or Music Director upon request. Any music not returned or any music returned in poor condition will be billed to the responsible musician.

Tuition

Tuition for the season is $150 for the first child and $75 for the second sibling. Tuition is required to defray the cost of concerts, music and salaries for the Music Director and coaches.

Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available for those in need. Contact any board member for a scholarship application.  All scholarships must be approved by the MLYS Board.

Parent Volunteers
All parents or guardians are required to donate at least five hours of time to the MLYS per semester. Please see the volunteer opportunities in the back of the Musician Handbook.
